This morning I woke up and read the paper. I am not sure why I do this, as it tends to either piss me off or depress me. I came across “Economic council to woo firms at big game“. My gut reaction was, citizens pay for douche bags to party at superbowl under false pretenses. After reading the article I think my initial assessment was fairly accurate.
Metro Phoenix is struggling financially and cutting education at a frightening pace. Instead of investing in local talent and businesses, the “experts” feel it is better to spend money to attempt to lure outside companies to fix our financial woes. I remember a while back when they lobbied to get Google to come here and succeeded. It didn’t help the economy any and a short time later it ultimately blew up in their face when Google abandoned ship. When will the government blockheads “get it”? Invest locally! Sure, it’s slower, but it’s far more sustainable.
As a citizen in Metro Phoenix, I’m sick of our local governments not believing in us! Please for the love of sunshine, invest in your local tax payers, invest in their children and invest in their neighborhoods. Stop applying bandaids and short term gains to get re-elected. Help us create local sustainable economies that aren’t based on land investment or tourism! We want to help, let us!

100% agreement. It will be interesting to see, if we do see, a report on the ROI of this boondoggle.
Man, I completely agree with you. First off: How in the world do you promote the Valley from Tampa? Wouldn’t it be better to court them here in Phoenix.
Secondly: Phoenix doesn’t lend itself to a lot of grassroots movements. Not sure exactly why this is? I think part of it is because the Valley is so spread out. Still, there are good things being done.
