East Valley Partnership Emerging Leaders Young Leaders Panel

Most people I know think that we need new leadership in Arizona government.  I constantly hear how so many of our elected officials are incompetent or irrelevant.  Clueless is a common adjective I hear in the banter.  I always ask people, “What are you doing about it?”.  I usually get back a blank stare or some mumbling about how there is nothing that can be done.

I have decided to try to do something about it.  I have decided that it is important that we encourage young, vibrant and competent hopefuls to step up to the plate and serve on various boards, commissions and committees in order to gain the experience to serve on town/city councils.  From there they can work their way onto the legislature or elsewhere.  It is imperative that we support and encourage the “good guys”.

It is great to see the East Valley Partnership start up its Emerging Leaders committee.  It is designed to help achieve this goal of getting the next generation of leaders to stand up and lead.  Recently they held an event at ASU Polytechnic Campus involving several council members in the East Valley.

EVP Emerging Leaders

Moderator: Mark Mitchell (Tempe)
Trinity Donovan (Chandler) “East Valley’s Smartest Council Member”
Dave Richins (Mesa) “Regular Guy”
Corey Woods (Tempe) “Tempe’s Most Eligible Bachelor”
Jenn Daniels (Gilbert) “Super Mom”
Julia Wheatley (Queen Creek) “Super Model”

This event was so much better than I expected.  I thought it would be council members talking about their pet issues from a vantage point of being younger.  However, it was the first time I have seen an entire panel of council members be completely transparent, lighthearted and willing to share the spotlight.  Dave Richins could have passed for a stand up comedian, giving each member their own moniker (included above).

What was truly special though was how each of them shared their trials and tribulations of getting elected to council at a young age.  Additionally, they discussed what was involved in being a council member, how they balance it with their other commitments and the struggles of being the youngest at the table in most discussions.

Most importantly is was great to see that each of them have a passion for civic duty and ran for the right reason (to serve their community).  They are a great example for future young leaders in the East Valley.  If you they represent you,  I strongly encourage you to get involved with them as they all seem readily approachable.  Looking forward to more content from this committee.
