We use 37 Signals Campfire for team chatter and various back channels. On OSX there is a desktop client called Propane. It works well and makes Campfire usable for our team. Recently, I started getting “Chat Terminated, Waiting to Restart” messages on a regular basis (like every time I attempted to talk in a room).
I tried clearing caches, rebooting and diagnosis of the networks I was on. I had been traveling a lot so initially I thought it was poor wifi at the places I was traveling. After a week of traveling and being back at office and having it happen on at least 30 different networks, I started to think maybe my airport had gone bad.
Jade Meskill had suggested clearing all local references to propane and so I did the following:
- Closed Propane
- Removed ~/Library/Application Support/Propane
- Removed ~/Library/Preferences/com.protocool.Propane.plist
- Removed ~/Library/Caches/com.protocool.Propane
- Restarted Propane
All my problems with Propane are now gone. Since I could not find any reference to fixing this on the Google(tm) adding as a blog post to maybe help someone else struggling with Campfire with Propane getting the Chat Terminated, Waiting to Restart error message.

I’m guessing that Campfire functions for this project a little bit like IRC used to for GNUEnterprise as a surrogate “office”, but with the benefit of being searchable and referenceable?
