I admit it. I’m addicted to books. I love to read. I have my father to blame for this addiction. I have talked about reading a lot in the past, but today it’s about something different. It’s about WRITING. You see if we are to have books to enjoy we have to have great writers writing them. I know I am horrible at the written word, but I also know that the only way to get any better is to practice. While I don’t have a lot of desire to write novels, I do want to be better at writing for a number of reasons. However, you may want to be a novelist or a great technical writer, but lack the discipline or confidence.

The great news is that November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). It is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30. Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved. Additionally, if you are a technical writer and have considered writing a technical book. You might want to look at Pragmatic Programmer Writing Month (PragProWriMo). We’ll start together on November first and in thirty days or less you’ll know if you are meant to write a book or not. Your commitment is to sit down every day and write pages. They don’t have to be good pages—they won’t be great pages—you’ll have plenty of time to fix them later. Keep writing.
