I’m addicted to books.  I love to read.  I have my father to blame for this addiction.  I have talked about reading a lot in the past, but today it’s about something different.  It’s about WRITING.  You see if we are to have books to enjoy we have to have great writers writing them.  I know I am horrible at the written word, but I also know that the only way to get any better is to practice.  While I don’t have a lot of desire to write novels, I do want to be better at writing for a number of reasons.  However, you may want to be a novelist or a great technical writer, but lack the discipline or confidence.

The great news is that November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo).  It is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30.  Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved.  So SIGN UP NOW!!!

Additionally, if you are a technical writer and have considered writing a technical book.  You might want to look at Pragmatic Programmer Writing Month (PragProWriMo).  We’ll start together on November first and in thirty days or less you’ll know if you are meant to write a book or not. Your commitment is to sit down every day and write pages. They don’t have to be good pages—they won’t be great pages—you’ll have plenty of time to fix them later. Keep writing.

Please pass the word.  Get out and write.  Readers like me around the world are depending on it!!!!

Got more motivation to keep slugging away at TextMate Tips.  Besides good comments here in the blog and on the video sites where the content is posted.

Spending 10 minutes every few days has gotten developers in the office talking about their tools more.  So while the initial goal was to get myself and some interns up to speed on TextMate, it really has pushed everyone to up their game.  In fact, I got this email today from Clayton…

Jay and I found a really useful shortcut for jumping between specs and the models/controllers they represent. Also works with jumping between a Cucumber feature file and its steps.

(With a model open)
CTRL-SHIFT-DOWN ARROW
Jumps to the spec file for this model (The opposite works when viewing a spec)

(With a feature open)
CTRL-SHIFT-DOWN ARROW
Jumps to the step file for this feature (The opposite works when viewing a step file)

Unfortunately I’m not sure which Bundle this comes with.

I am hoping that after getting out of the basics with the Tip of the Day we will get to more advanced content/bundles.  Soon.  Just be patient.
